As the Submissions Manager of Mind Cafe & Editor of The Apeiron, I review over 300 articles a week from a variety of writers.

Of those 300, roughly only 10% get accepted.

That means I reject over 1000 articles a month.

Getting your first article published on an esteemed publication can be difficult. The amount of writers on Medium is forever increasing, and with that — the quality and expectation of writer submissions are on the rise.

A lot of the articles that get rejected make errors that, once identified, are pretty easy to fix. But, sadly, I don’t have the time to leave personalized feedback on every article that comes in.

If you’re wondering why your piece wasn’t picked up by a publication, it might be worth you reviewing your article.

To make your life easier, here are some tips and common mistakes I’ve noticed when reviewing your work.
